A literal and figurative 3 day blast. Day #1.

Dave was on spring break and so we had a couple days to go on a trip. Atlanta? The Carolinas? Tampa? Alabama? The Keys? I couldn't figure it out. But we knew we were going to the space shuttle launch. So as I sat in sacrament meeting, pondering life, it came to me. We would go to Titusville, watch the shuttle launch, stay in a free* hotel that night, live it up at the hotel like the kids love to do, go to downtown disney, shop at IKEA, drive through picturesque Mt. Dora, camp in Ocala National Forest, visit Paynes Prairie State Park and head back home. All in 2.5 days.

After we got home from church (yes, all 3 meetings), Dave man-handled the children and made us a good meal and cleaned up, and I packed the car like a banshee (clothes, food for 3 days, all camping gear, and all children necessities). We left 1 1/2 hours later. We are really getting this down! Practice makes perfect and we really like to practice this kind of thing.

So first stop:
We went there. We saw it. We beheld the glory. And now you can too:

In person it's better of course. We didn't actually hear the sound until a minute or so after blast off. After a while we even saw the boosters as they seperated and fell off into the ocean. Here are some more pics:

still waiting... (can you see what Dave did while waiting?)

Blast Off!

Awesome rainbow smoke trail

Sorry I don't have photos of the traffic to our fantastically free hotel in Orlando. It's usually about a 30 min. drive to Orlando from Titusville, but on shuttle launch days it's more like a 3 hour drive. No joke. But at last we arrived safe and sound checked into our wondergul Wyndham and got some much needed zzz's.
