Dogs for a day

Look at these cute doggies (and boys). We woke up one morning to find these beautiful weimaraners in our yard. At first they freaked us out being so big and all and running right up to us. But then we found out that they were super friendly and fun. They seemed to be really tired and hungry so after playing with them for a bit we fed them what we could find that seemed somewhat appropriate for dogs: hot dogs and bread? The lighter dog was a young energetic male and the darker one was a tired old female. They were both super sweet. The female jumped into Dave's car when he opened the door to leave for school and curled up on the seat and refused to get out. That was a sight watching Dave wrestle with her to get her out.

Well we thought they would run off, but they continued to hang around. Our neighbor came by and said she knew who they belonged to and she took them (turns out she was wrong). So a short time later they pushed open our back gate and went into the yard and began whining under an open window. They continued to hang around so I fed them a few boxes of crackers. I put up a sign out by the main road hoping the owners would see it and call us. But no one called. The kids played chase and catch with them and had such a great time having their own dogs for a day! They were great dogs and obedient too! Oh, and they didn't bark! (We really don't like barking dogs, especially if they are next door and yap all night long).

The dogs spent the night and made themselves comfortable on the back patio couches. But around 1am I woke up and saw them run from the backyard and away from our house. So I snuck outside and shut the gate hard hoping to lock them out and maybe they would decide to find their way home. I also shut the patio door so they couldn't get back in there either. Much to my chagrin at 3am I heard a very loud banging noise, BANG!, there goes the gate. A few moments later more banging and scratching on the patio door. Fine! I let them back in. And there they were, curled up on their couches when we awoke in the morning. Their breakfast consisted of raw eggs mixed with bread, oatmeal and gravy. Yeah, wierd. But they ate it.

I couldn't do another night like that and I was running out of "dog food" so I decided we'd just have to take them to the animal control shelter and hope their owners would find them there. We were actually super sad to see them go (I even shed a tear), Dave and I even more so than the kids (now that's saying something, Dave even considered keeping them... for a second). These dogs were the best of friends you could ever see and I sure hope their owners came and got them both. It was fun having such great dogs for a day. And don't tell the kids but maybe, just maybe, one day we might be able to handle having a dog of our own...

April,
Those are beautiful dogs. Have you seen Incredible Journey? Maybe just maybe at one time that was their house! You are sweet to take care of them and love them when they were at your house. I sure hope their owner found them.

Oh, April, I hope you took those beautiful dogs to the Humane Society( that has a no kill policy.)

We had the same breed when I was a kid and they are the sweetest, most even tempered doggies that you could ever have. Our dog's name was "Blue Girl" and she had the most amazing blue eyes and was the most loving dog I ever had !!!

I will pray that they find their owners or a new loving home like the temporary one you guys gave them !

CAn't believe Mr. "YOu don't need a dog, all you need is a friend with a dog" considered ....if only for a second...to keep the dogs (PLURAL!!). AHHHH, I knew there was a doggie heart in there somewhere.
