In Ohio

So I have returned yet again to the beloved state of Ohio. It's such a nice state! I am here with my Mom, in Cincinnati. We will be here for a week as I recover from another ACL surgery. After lots of coordinating and planning, my Mom and I both arrived in Cincinnati last Thursday, Sept. 11th. On Friday morning I checked into the Jewish Hospital for my third ACL reconstruction. Dr. Noyes is the bomb-diggy and a true blessing in my life. There have been many miracles that happened in order to get me this far and I am so grateful! This surgery is going to be a success.

So the surgery went well! This time the Dr. was going to try and use the hamstring from my left leg. But when he went in and harvested it, it wasn't going to work, it was too small. In that case, Dr. Noyes had previously told me he would have to go into my non-injured right leg and use a tendon from there. Well, luckily, or miraculously, he instead examined my left knee's patellar tendon (which had been used already in my 1st ACL surgery) and he saw that it had grown big and strong again and he was able to use it again this time! I am so grateful he didn't have to do any damage to my good leg! So he attached the tendon, making me a new ACL and also tightened other tendons on the left side of my knee. This will give my knee greater stability and support for the new ACL.

This is the first surgery that I wasn't kicked to the curb a couple hours after going under. I was actually pampered and got to spend the night in the hospital. That was super nice. So Saturday afternoon I was discharged and we headed over to our hotel for the weekend. My leg has tons of bandages, cotton, cold packs, and braces on it. It is HUGE! I can't wait to go in tomorrow for physical therapy to get this stuff taken off!

It is now Sunday night and we have already had one too many adventures here. Last night at 10:30pm all of a sudden I started have troubles breathing. Within 5 minutes my right nostril completely closed and my throat began to swell and close. I was so scared! I didn't know if my airways would continue to close and stop me from breathing! Then I started getting hives on my eyes and they began to swell shut too. My face was swelling too. Boy was I a sight! Luckily, very luckily, it stabilized. But still today I am very itchy and my eyes are still swollen. What the heck? I have no idea why that happened because all I'd had that day were cheerios, a salad at 5pm, and ibuprofen at 6pm. So why did this come on so quick at 10:30 at night? Let me just say it was a rough night.

Then today the winds from Ike arrived in Ohio. We didn't get hardly any rain but we did get winds up to 70 mph! Trees were breaking, fences and building parts blowing away! Not to mention the power went out in our hotel and in 500,000 homes in the area! Luckily we got power back before it went dark. I can't imagine hobbling to the bathroom on crutches with the lights out. Not fun. Luckily I didn't have to experience that. Someone is watching over us!

So for now my Mom (who has been a great help!) and I are just laying around, reading, napping, and feeling a bit bored and sluggish. But at least we are now doing it in an air conditioned room.

(Excuse this post if it may sound a little spacey, I'm still a bit drugged and am feeling loopy)

I am so glad you are doing O.K. As for the allergic reaction, I can help you! There are benedryl gel caps (allergy dye free) that are sold over the counter. Have your mom cut two open and put the gel under your tongue (it's nasty bitter but will stop the allergic reaction quickly). How scary, I have had my throat swell up and it's horrible!
This remedy was recommended to me by the allergy doc in CO Springs.
Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

Oh my goodness. I didn't know you had bad knees. I have serious sympathy. I've had 3 ACL repairs in the past and am headed for another miniscus repair soon. Bad knees are tough and recovery is not fun at all! Get well soon! You are amazing.

April, I am so sorry about your knee issues. I would have never guessed since you were the only one super-human enough to have kept running even as an exhausted missionary. I hope you get all better.

Wow, what an adventurous trip! I am glad you could make it back home to your family in one piece. That is great that your husband got that opportunity to be with the kids. Maybe make it a yearly thing (not the surgery part, just the leave the kids home part).
